Pre Shot Routines
As we all know, to play golf well there are lots of things we need to think about and get under control. This can be difficult for many players because they do not have a routine or plan to tackle these thoughts.
The aim of a pre shot routine is to give you a thinking process to help with processing your golf thoughts effectively. When watching the best players in the world, before every shot they hit they have a routine that enables them to process everything required to play a desired shot, whilst managing their emotions.
A popular routine format used is the “think box” and “play box” method.
This one was used by Annika Sorenstam. It separates the pre-shot routine into the “thinking” and the “playing”.
Once you’ve decided on your strategy and shot, your thinking is done and it’s time to play. Then you can take your practice swings (thinking about nothing but that shot and that target) and get yourself aligned. Try to train your brain to do this and catch yourself if you don’t. Once you cross the imaginary line between the “think box” and the “play box” it’s all about trusting your body and focusing on the target.
